How To Sync Subtitles In VLC Media Player

Several types of subtitle files are doing slightly different things. For example, a common type is SRT. However, all the subtitles have some things in common. They have a range of subtitle text and the amount of time it should appear. Other factors such as font, font size, font color, etc. may vary between different subtitle formats.

How To Sync Subtitles In VLC Media Player

Out of sync subtitled tracks are always annoying and frustrating. VLC Player offers an easy solution to this problem. If your video and subtitle track have the same frame rate then you can use the inbuilt subtitle sync feature in VLC.

Most out of sync subtitles are either delayed by a few seconds or appear sharper than the audio track. To fix this you can do the following. Go to Tools > Effects and Filters or press the shortcut Ctrl+E.

This will open the Adjustments and Effects window. There, click on the Synchronization tab.

Under the Subtitles/Videos section you can click the up arrow to delay the subtitles. This will delay the subtitles if they appear in front of the audio. Clicking the up arrow increases the delay value by 100 milliseconds which is one-tenth of a second. So if your subtitles appear one second before the audio you can increase the delay to 1000 milliseconds (1 second = 1000 milliseconds).

Similarly, if your subtitles appear after listening to the audio you can click the down arrow which will set the value to minus milliseconds. A value of -1000 milliseconds will speed up the subtitle by 1 second.

Another way to do this is with keyboard shortcuts. You can press H if your subtitles appear in front of the audio. Pressing H will delay the subtitles by 50 milliseconds. Press it repeatedly until your subscriptions are synced.

Similarly, if subtitles appear after the audio, you can press G to accelerate them.

If subtitles show up late, you can also sync subtitles with Detect & Listen.

                                             

Press Shift + H to hear audio or dialogue.

Press Shift + J to read the same sentence in the subtitle.

Press Shift+K to fix sync.

You have to sync subtitles every time you play an out of sync video. So, don't close VLC after syncing subtitles otherwise you will have to do it again.
